U.S. Department of Education ED Youth Voices recognizes a Boston student who is transforming communities and schools!

Washington, DC – on Thursday, June 27, 2013 – the U.S. Acting Deputy Secretary Jim Shelton welcomed a student speaker from Boston by the name of Heaven Reda to discuss her experiences and successes as a young person who has taken action to impact change in her community and throughout the nation. The discussion was moderated by Thaddeus Ferber, VP of Public Policy Advocacy at the Forum for Youth Investment.

For the past two years, ED’s Youth Engagement Initiative has supported and encouraged young people to conduct personal assessments to determine hindrances to their achievement. As a result, ED has used this evidence to align federal programs with the needs of young people. (Edstream.ed.gov)

Heaven Reda, BSAC is a recent high school graduate of Urban Science Academy in West Roxbury, MA. She discovered her passion for justice through her involvement on her school’s policy debate team. As a sophomore in high school, she found that she wanted to influence local policies and exercise her public speaking skills. As a junior, she become the VP of the Boston Student Advisory Council, and later became president.
