Takes a Stand

Under
the leadership of Peg Crowe, newly appointed acting Executive Director of the
YWCA Malden taking a stand against racism has been a part of their mantra for
years. Started in 2007, Stand Against Racism has been a signature campaign of
the YWCA USA. Over 2000 organizations have joined to help raise awareness for
racial justice and to dismantle institutional racism throughout local
communities.
The
YWCA Malden knows that being mindful of how implicit and unconscious bias can
impact our everyday lives can be uncomfortable at times, but they know inaction
and silence can deter many from achieving their highest form of success.
Therefore, it is imperative that we all speak up and advocate whenever possible.
The
campaign ran from April 26 – April 29, 2018, and the YWCA Malden asks that
you support the social media activism of its teen members. The teen TASK
Program led by Chris Murphy has successfully reached countless youth helping
girls to develop self-esteem, confidence and tackle pertinent issues such as
racism using creativity.
TASK teens had this to say, “At Malden High diversity means less racism.”
The
YWCA Malden wants you to know that girls struggle with the effects of both
sexism and racism, and have unique challenges including excessive school
discipline, disproportionate trauma and violence, unequal educational
opportunities, and the sexual abuse-to-prison pipeline.
As
a trauma survivor, being raised in a home with domestic violence and having
been called racial slurs, serving in this new role as Director of Teen
Programs, I can attest to the need for the YWCA Malden to continue this work to
push our girls forward despite their obstacles.
It
is the hope of the YWCA Malden that if we join forces with members of our
constituency and throughout the city of Malden who seek to understand the
imperativeness in helping our youth grow as academicians, helping them to
understand the value of civic discourse and peer-mentorship we can ensure our
communities thrive in the 21st century.

Conference, McDonald's tripling college benefits, Zuckerberg plans for Facebook,
Cambridge College Opens Gaming Career Institute, Scholarships, Summer Programs,
and more youth career news
Since
2015, McDonald's has provided college tuition assistance to over 16,400
employees through its Archways to Opportunity education program.
Last week, the fast food behemoth announced plans to increase the program by
allocating $150 million over five years and lowering eligibility requirements
from nine months to 90 days of employment and weekly shift minimums from 20
hours to 15 hours.

School, 37 Babson St, Mattapan, MA 02126. The 3rd Annual Youth Leadership Symposium is an all-day event
full of personal and professional development workshops. That encourages
conversation, networking, and team building activities for Middle and High
School students. M.O.V.E., Inc. has also invite me parents to take part in
their workshops.

College Survival Tips for Students with Chronic Illnesses

College is an exciting time in a teen’s life. Students gain knowledge and learn skills that help to prepare them for their careers. They are also transitioning into adulthood; figuring out who they are and trying to find their way in the real world.
While college can be hard for anyone to adjust to, it is particularly difficult for those who are living with a chronic illness. Whether it’s diabetes, cystic fibrosis, asthma, or any other chronic condition, an illness can severely impact a college student’s life. It interrupts routines, makes it hard to establish and maintain relationships, impacts on-campus living; in other words, having a chronic illness can have an adverse effect on the entire college experience.
While having a chronic illness can certainly make college more challenging, there are ways that students can prepare themselves so that they can better manage a specific condition and get the most out of their collegiate career.
