Today I had the chance to sit down and talk with Deputy Director Ronald E. Blakely from @usedgov, #Tuskegee University alum, #Army #Veteran and currently with the Department of Education working on #HBCU initiatives.

Here are my takeaway’s:

INVITE: U.S. Department of Education, OPEN Briefing, Wednesday, April 10

The U.S. Department of Education will hold a briefing on the President's Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Request Wednesday, April 10, starting at 1:30 PM in the Department Auditorium (400 Maryland Avenue, S.W., Washington, DC, 20202).  Reservations are not required.

For security purposes, attendees are reminded to bring a photo ID and a business card.  As in previous years, attendees are requested to enter the Department on the C Street side of the building (across from the McDonald’s), go through the magnetometers, and show their photo ID to the guards.  However, instead of signing-in at the Front Desk, attendees will be directed to the auditorium's rear doors, where they will be asked to submit a business card OR record their name, organization, and contact information on a sign-in sheet. 

At this point, the budget book and briefing materials will be distributed.

To teach one of the following areas:

·         Pre-calculus, Calculus

·         Algebra with Statistics

·         Trigonometry

·         Anatomy & Physiology,

·         Physics

LOCATION:      BAHEC, 729 Mass Ave., Miranda Creamer Bldg. (Mass. Ave. & Albany, near BMC)

SUPERVISOR:   Education Coordinator/BAHEC Director

Rate:                $31.25/hour (additional paid for preparation time)

HOURS:           Part Time 2-6 Hours/Week

DAYS/TIMES:   TBD: Class days run from 9AM-3:30 pm, Mondays-Wednesdays

DATES:             July 8, 2013 – August 7, 2013

Responsibilities:

• Plan and implement Science and Math curriculum geared towards Boston Middle/High School Students interested in Health Professions.
• Link curriculum to MA Department of Education’s Standards and Frameworks
• Maintain accurate attendance records.
• Maintain regular communication with Education Coordinator(s) regarding student progress.
• Complete mid-program and final evaluations of students and program.
• Instructors are encouraged to attend a field trip/special event during the course of the program.
• Attend paid Instructor workshop/meetings on planning, developing, and training activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree, MA/MS preferred.
• Teaching experience.
• Experience working effectively with students and staff of various cultures and linguistic backgrounds.
• Experience working with adolescents preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• Bilingual/multicultural skills preferred, but not necessary.
• Creativity and ability to foster curiosity.
• Ability to facilitate professional and interactive atmosphere.

Ms. Cymone is pictured with her mom Nikki, CEO/Dance Instructor of SSSJ-Soca Dance Fitness Class in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ms. Cymone won the above pictured award for 'Student of the Month for her class in February 2013. She is a 3rd grader at Woodland Elementary Charter School in Atlanta, GA. She loves to read, dance, rollerskate, run and play with her friends. Her role models are her mom and big sister.
She wants to be an athlete when she grows up.

Lastly, Ms. Cymone says, 'One of my goals is to be the best person I can be!'.

Significantly improving the educational outcomes of African Americans

Washington, DC – on Tuesday, February 26th, 2013 – the U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the new appointment of David Johns, the new Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans.


The initiative will work with the President and agencies to identify evidence-based best practices to improve African American students’ achievement in school and college. It will build a network of people, grassroots organizations and communities to share those practices.

David Johns has served as a Senior Education Policy Advisor to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions under the Leadership of Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA). His policy portfolio includes issues affecting low-income and minority students; neglected youth and early childhood education; and Historically Black institutions.

Prior to his work in the Administration, Johns conducted research as a Mellon Fellow which served as a catalyst to identify, disrupt, and supplant deleterious perceptions of black males both within academia and society. Johns is committed to volunteer services and maintains an active commitment to improve literacy among adolescence minority males.

Johns obtained a Master’s Degree in Sociology and Education Policy at Teachers College, Columbia University graduating summa cum laude, while simultaneously teaching elementary school in New York. Johns graduated cum laude from Columbia University in 2004 with a triple major in English, Creative Writing and African American Studies.

Amber is an IVY League education Med student at Brown University and holds the title of Miss Black Rhode Island 2013. In the picture it is I, Natascha, Miss Black Rhode Island '07 who crowned her.
Our Mission: Miss Black USA Pageant provides educational opportunities to outstanding young women of color and develops the "whole woman mind, body, and spirit. (We have no swimsuit.) We celebrate scholastic achievement. We average A/B GPA's across the board. The year I won, they paid for my MBA and sent me to West Africa, so I could serve as a Goodwill Ambassador.
