The #2015 #HowTo Guide to #VisionStatements and #GoalSetting

The 2015 Guide to #VisionStatements and #GoalSetting

“Establishing your brand by identifying your passion”
Starts….with a vision of your purpose and is accomplished by goal setting

What is entrepreneurship? The capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit.
www.businessdictionary.com

Brands are built on what people are saying about you, not what you are saying about yourself. CEO, Guy Kawasaki

Your personal vision statement guides your life and provides the direction necessary to chart the course of your days, choices you make, helps you achieve your goals, guides you to apply what you’ve learned, and ultimately is the LEADERSHIP legacy you leave behind.

Webster’s dictionary defines vision as…..
1.                  A thought, concept, or object formed by the imagination
2.                  A manifestation to the senses of something immaterial
3.                  To act or power of imagination

What is your Vision?
We have all thought about the things we’d like to accomplish in our lifetime. However, most never write these thoughts down. A vision statement describes how you see yourself in the future, but speaking it and writing it in the present tense. Meaning you have not accomplished these things yet, but you are making the statement as if you have. For example, ‘I am a motivational speaker.’ ‘I am a business owner.’ ‘I am a president of a company that resells used sneakers and b-caps. ’I am happy.’ ‘I am smart.’ ‘I am an Author of a Best Selling Novel.’ ‘I am a straight A & B student and have become a 1st generation college graduate.’ “I am Press Secretary for the United States.’ ‘I am a reporter for the NBA.’ ‘I have been accepted into the White House Internship program.’ ‘I am a medical student at Harvard.’ ‘I am an inventor and have been working with MIT to bring my idea to market.’ “I am a home owner’.  ~ Although you haven’t accomplished these things we are speaking them into existence.

ANSWER
Write down three reasons why it is important for you to have a vision statement which includes the following areas: FINANCIAL, (investments, savings, money), CAREER (entrepreneurship, job, internships, business, social media), FAMILY (children, parents, pets*), SPIRITUAL (faith, church, prayer, meditation), HEALTH (fitness, doctors, eating, exercise), ACADEMIC (college, grades, knowledge), and LEISURE (travel, reading, activities)?

** First create this vision for you. Remember you being your statements with ‘I AM’, but then ensure that the 5 people you spend the most time with have vision statements for their lives as well.

** Take this a step further, but ONLY after you have a written statement ~ create a Pinterest, video, or vision board.

Let’s take a look at some abbreviated SAMPLES

I am Tameka Jackson. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering with honors from MIT and have overcome the abuse I experienced growing up as a child. I have been accepted into a national fellowship program. Starting this summer I will be working in Boston, MA for the FBI and I volunteer on my weekends.

My name is Michael Lawson. I am a graduate of Jeremiah E. Burke High School. I secured an internship with the New England Patriots. I take 3 busses from Dorchester to Foxboro just to make this internship every week. At night and on my weekends I deliver pizza to make extra money. I have started my own sports agency and have interviewed other sport agents to learn how they started their own businesses. I just received a job offer to work for a national sports agency, and I’m excepting while I continue to work my business plan.

My name is Nichole Smith I am in the best shape of my life. I have not let the fact that I became pregnant at a young age, or the fact that I was homeless in my youth, stop me from becoming my greatest self. I have a cosmetology certificate and am able to do the best make-up in Boston. I am also one year away from earning by Masters in Communications degree. I have two best friends, have joined an awesome church, and I’m living a purpose-driven life every day. I live in a great apartment, and make a good salary. Also, I get a call every year to do make up for all the celebrities for Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. I am happy.
C-Suite example: Within two years, achieve 40 percent market share in the computer headphone/microphone industry, receive the J.D. Power highest quality rating in the industry, and receive 95 percent or above good or excellent ratings on our customer-service surveys.

Natascha’s Past Vision Statement: “My name is Natascha F. Saunders and I am a top certified career coach, dynamic motivational speaker, sought after author, policy change agent, who is in perfect health in mind, body, & soul. I have no financial debt because I am a young entrepreneur who owns her own firm and I am worth 1 million dollars; while being only 35 years old. I have earned my Doctorate in Educational Leadership and I’m known for my research expertise in Career Development. You can read my story in Black Enterprise, Ebony & Essence Magazine under successful professionals under 40.”

TAKE ACTION

Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it will tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. ~ Habakkuk 2:3-4

Write the FIRST draft of your vision statement?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Write the SECOND draft of your vision statement?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Write the FINAL draft of your vision statement?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

NOW TIME TO MEMORIZE AND POST UP IN YOUR HOUSE!

Next steps ….

Take your vision and turn it into action by setting goals….

GOAL
Webster’s dictionary defines a goal as…..
1.      The result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end

Describe the goal you hope to reach. Try to keep it between 1-2 sentences. For example, In order for you to have been accepted into graduate school you needed to obtain letters of recommendations, write essays, and earned good grades. In order to start your own business I tend to recommend that my clients conduct an informational interview with three business owners to ask questions on how they got started. In order for you to find a job or a board seat, you should make a list of the places you want to apply, select an outfit, print your resume/CV, apply and follow-up with a phone call.

Review your vision statement and determine what steps (micro-goals) you need to accomplish in order to make this vision come true! I’d like to see at least five goals, 3 that you will do each month in 2015. Remember they need to be small steps.

Goal 1:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 2:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 3:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 4:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 5:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
Lastly, the final step is for you to determine what you will need in order to accomplish these goals (personal, academic, professional, entrepreneurial). No one does anything alone!

A few of Tascha’s Lessons in #Entrepreneurship
Ø  There is value in internships, volunteer work and/or working for someone else to gain experience that can be used in entrepreneurship.

Ø  There will be disappointments such as: not getting a contract, client bounce checks, clients not paying you for months, so save and plan ahead and find a person you can vent to.

Ø  Even if you work alone, you need many mentors. Find them by any means necessary.

Ø  Musts: resume/CV, website, blog, LinkedIn, and business facebook page.

Ø  Conduct informational interviews with anyone (no matter age, gender or race) you admire for their leadership, education, the fact that they own a business, know powerful people, etc.

Ladies: Class, Etiquette, and Manners, anyone?

Ladies: #Class, #Etiquette, and #Manners, anyone?

I am seeing the need for etiquette classes. Over this past month women in particular, I've notice: tend to say things at inappropriate times in public, put things on social media that clearly should be kept private (such as blasting out parents, children, men etc.) etc.

Does anyone have any filters? Where is the class?

The other day I had spoken up because someone said the modeling school, ‘Barbizon’, was a waste of money without even knowing the curriculum, their teachers, nor did they know that I graduated from Barbizon and was trained to teach their curriculum.
ETIQUETTE

All I know is my mother enrolled me in Barbizon during my middle school years, NOT to become a model or an actor but to help build my self-esteem,  teach me basic etiquette, class, communication, proper make-up, sitting, standing, listening, vulgarity when is it appropriate, relationships with other girls, smiling, shaking hands, etc.

“The Barbizon experience is about discovering what makes you special, and developing your one-of-a-kind "star" quality for the whole world to see.” Their expert modeling and acting training, along with life-skills instruction, will give you the confidence and tools to shine for a lifetime.” ~ http://www.barbizonmodeling.com/index.php ~ These are skills I’ve used ever since. I want to stand out as the ‘Youth Career Coach’.

I want to be the best of the best. I want anyone and everyone that works with me to become an expert in their field, to be confident in who they are, shine, stand out and have a brand like no other.

I had two of my most memorable teachers Claire Williams and Smiler Questel Haynes (my first teacher of color). Ms. Claire Williams was a true diva – the first women I saw in 4 inch heels with a proper length pencil skirt!

LIVING THROUGH A FIRE

When I was going through Barbizon, my family had a fire in our home, and I lost everything and I mean everything. Ms. Williams showed up to my door at Academy Homes, in Roxbury, MA with a bag of clothes. Talk about teaching me to walk in grace despite the wearing of used clothes over and over again ‘before it was cool’.

Ms. Haynes was the epitome of class and I'm grateful to her for teaching me how to be a lady. As a brown skin girl - she was - what I wanted to be like on every Saturday morning I went to class.

I am NOT perfect, nor do I claim to be but I'm proud to have a mom and dad that provided me some tools to help distinguish me from the rest and teach me etiquette. If I was too loud in public all my dad had to do was look at me and I knew to calm down, relax and talk – because after all the person was standing right in front of me. lol

I realize my focus is ‘careers and vision’ but goodness gracious....I kept my Barbizon Curriculum (as I was trained to teach by Barbizon, following in the footsteps of Ms. Haynes) and I have no problem dusting it off and bringing this training to young women.

Let's step it up, our brand depends on it! Let’s show some stylish class and excellence!

Who created the concept of #TargetMarketing?

Do you know who created the internationally-used concept and principles of 'Target Marketing' (in short advertising to a certain group of people)?

A Black Man, named H. Naylor Fitzhugh. Called the 'Dean of Black Business'. He built Howard's curriculum between 1934 and 1965.

Dr. Fitzhugh received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, Cum Laude in 1931. And was one of the first African Americans to earn an MBA from the Harvard School of Business, despite the fact that he was PROHIBITED FROM LIVING on campus because of his face!

Amongst his legacy Dr. Fitzhugh measures his own success in the currency of giving. His co-founding of the Negro Alliance was in support of his leadership to change company business policies that supported selling to blacks, but refused to hire them!

His belief was that 'blacks should enter the business field as a way of controlling our destiny'.

A true visionary and a pioneer in research, he let nothing deter his path of excellence, service, leadership, and truth-paving!

~This gives me hope that having attended #PWI my whole life I too can make this type of impact, even still!

Howard University School of Education Lecture - Colloquium Series

Capturing the moment I attended my very first lecture on the campus of Howard University! In addition, capturing the man who changed my perspective on education and taught me to question the validity of data!

Soon after I arrived in Washington, D.C. as an unpaid intern for the U.S. Department of Education and was a resident at the Heritage Foundation I met Dr. Ivory Toldson after walking up to him in order to introduce myself after one of his speeches.

If you do not know of him, I implore you to google his name along with the 'White House' and get familiar.

As a non-traditional full-time doctoral student who had to maintain multiple jobs, etc. in order to be a volunteer for 8 months and still pay rent, he inspired me by spending one hour with me educating me on what I could do.

Now I am a Reviewer & Interviewer for The Journal of Negro Education where he serves as, Editor-in-Chief, amongst his many other responsibilities.

I encourage those in education in any capacity (parents, teachers, students, supporters, etc.) of all colors and creeds to utilize this journal!

Sincerely, Natascha Saunders,www.TheYouthCareerCoach.com

How To Be Sure YOU Have a BRAND!

How To Be Sure YOU Have a BRAND!
By Natascha F. Saunders, Certified Career Coach

Personal branding is defined as the process by which you market yourself to others. It is how you position yourself for success. Branding is not just for the rich and famous; it is for the teacher, administrative assistant, finance consultant, culinary artist, computer specialist and parent.

#Branding influences everyone regardless of age, race, gender or occupation.

Your brand is in play 24 hours a day.

When you wake up and your child looks you in the eyes, they have formed an opinion about the type of parent you are. When you walk by the cleaning crew at your office and don’t say, “Good morning,” you’ve branded yourself.

We are beyond the days where you can have a distinct “personal” and “corporate” brand. You must decide today who you are and who you want others to think you are, and act on it. You must determine how you will differentiate yourself from the mass of humanity.

11 QUESTIONS TO DETERMINE WHERE YOUR BRAND STANDS:
  • Do you have a clearly defined and written personal vision statement of where you want your career and life to go?
  • Can you say your brand is consistent with your values, interests, personality, skills, and accomplishments? And can you explain your characteristics that make up your brand?
  • Have you created a clearly defined brand positioning statement (or elevator pitch) and target audience for your brand message?
  • Can you explain what makes you unique and better qualified than your competitors?
  • Does your résumé or CV have a brand that seems to resonate with those who read it? If you aren’t sure, ask a peer reviewer and an HR professional?
  • Are you able to articulate how your personal brand is better than your competitors?
  • Do you have a professional website or blog specifically designed to deliver your brand message and showcase your accomplishments.
  • Do you have a mentor and/or sponsor who helps with your career goals and personal branding strategy?
  • Do you have a network of contacts that know your brand value and are able to communicate it? And can you access this network by phone and email at any time?
  • Do you have a strong “Googleability” rating and online presence where you can track, quantify and report your key accomplishments to your superiors and network of contacts? Is this information kept in a personal report?
  • Lastly, do you have a plan for reducing and eliminating any real or perceived negative elements of your personal brand? Are you soliciting feedback about your brand from associates, friends, family and colleagues at least twice a year?

“Brands are built on what people are saying about you, NOT what you are saying about yourself.”

The Visa Interview

The #Visa Interview

I’m preparing for my interview. I am so nervous. I just want to be sure I do and say everything right. My hands are sweating. I’m thinking about my family because I want them to be proud of me. I’ve heard many things about America and I’m just excited at the opportunity. I realize I’m going to a rural area of Wisconsin, so I’m very curious as towards what it will be like when I arrive. Are there tons of cars? Do the students go out on the weekends? How much do American students study? Will the work be easy? Oh goodness, let me just focus on this interview. I wonder what they will ask me. Will they like my answers? Will they be able to understand my English? I did read on a blog that,

'The visa officer is looking for an honest student who intends to study in the US, has reasonable funds and an economic standing/ financial plan to pay for it and intends to return to India upon completion.' ~ Aroosha Z. Rana, Vice Consul, U.S.

Well, I’m going to do my very best to be sure I do just that! Off I go!

I’m at the #interview. I can’t believe I made it but I’m so ready for this. I did go through a security check like I was told I would and it went okay. It’s like going through the airport, nothing I can’t handle. I was given a number as I entered the #embassy. I watched the board with fascination, waiting for my number to be called. I made sure to keep a smile on my face and give really good handshakes to anyone that reached out their hand. I brought all of my documents like they said to. I practiced answering questions with my friends who went through this process before and with a few English tutors that I had. Ooooh, they just called me in, wish me luck.

After the interview. So the interview went good. I was asked about where I went to school. Why do I want to go to school in the US? Why college in rural Wisconsin? What do I plan to study? What do I plan to do after my degree is finished? I answered all of the questions as best I could, short and to the point. I made sure to emphasis that it’s just to study with the renowned faculty and I look forward to the opportunity of returning home to my family and using the knowledge I’ve gained in our family business.

End
P.S. Just heard back a few weeks later – I was approved for my student visa!
