Good Day Family,

I never cease to be amazed at the fact that with all of the knowledge that we currently have about the need to be prepared for the future, many people are still averse to planning ahead. Having a plan helps us to move forward and to grow in a way that is less haphazard. It has been said, "The only degree of control that we have in an uncontrollable life is the degree to which we have a plan." Indeed this is true. Let me be clear - a plan is not a guarantee of anything. However, not having a plan is a guarantee that your future achievements and your results will be minimal at best.   As a Pastor, I have always sought to begin a new year with a vision and a plan for the year to come. It always helps us to keep the ministry on track and to provide a map for our direction. Mother Irma Gwinn, one of my spiritual mentors, often said when God is in your plans you can make your plans large. Thus, I have never set limits on what God and I can accomplish together. Because I believe the word of God, I know that for God all things are possible (Matthew 19-26).   As we begin this new year, it's time to have a plan for the things that you would like to achieve in 2013. Take the time to set some goals for 2013 - at minimum four. One should be spiritual, one physical (health and fitness), one financial and one relational (dealing with your interaction with others). You can have more if you like, but remember goals should be S.M.A.R.T. - specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. Only plan as many goals as you think that you can achieve, but do not underestimate yourself or your ability. Most of us can accomplish far more that we think.   So, it's time to set the course for an exciting and amazing new year. Your vision is your only limitation. Think big. Think out of the box. Think differently. Think like you are God's son or daughter, because you are.   With a vision, a plan and a purpose,

Professional Development Tips to use right now before 2013 comes into play!

 ‘We must use our time wisely’.

The year is winding down, and soon we’ll be saying ‘Happy New Year’. Did you make any promises to yourself that you were going to accomplish a few things before the year ended? Are you happy with what you’ve accomplished thus far? If you are great, congratulations stay the course. However, for those that could use a little push from the career coach, here are 5 tips to get back on Your Grind:

1.     Take inventory. Accept where you are, reflect on the past, create a plan to address it, determine what you need to surpass it and keep moving!

2.     Know when to move on. This is tough in relationships or in a job. However, try this – stand in front of a mirror and ask yourself, “Is what I am holding onto really where I should be?

3.     Find some ‘motivation’. You need ‘motivation’ to support you when those not so good days arise. Determine who or what can provide that motivation and set up a regular check’ in.

4.     Manage your cipher. My mentor, Attorney Joe Feaster said, ‘We have partners, friends, and associates and then there are people we just know.’ Categorize the people in your life. Determine how much time you give out and under what circumstance.

5.     Take a break from the calls, text, email & social media. Trust me this is hard but productivity is lost. Consider downloading a program on your computer to limit the amount of time you spend online (like Leechblock).

Do You Know Your Purpose?

A few months ago, I went in for a routine eye exam to only be sent in urgency to another hospital to learn that I have an excess of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) building up in my brain. On yesterday, I had a lumbar puncture which helps to relieve the pressure in my brain and can help to prevent vision problems or blindness, which they say can occur. Now, NO NEED to feel sorry, I’m good!

I debated for weeks if I should post this on facebook but this morning I woke up after being in prayer realizing that God’s purpose for my life is so much greater than being a career coach; and that if anyone was an open book and willing to share their ups & downs, God knows it’s me.

There is a reason why each of you has connected to me on social media, each of you has chosen to share a piece of your world with me and I have done the same. So I ask you, DO YOU KNOW YOUR PURPOSE? 

We all have faced trials and tribulations, disappointments and horrible tragedies but if we have opened our eyes on today our purpose on this earth has not be completed. Steve Jobs, in his famous graduating class at Stanford speech, said he starts his day asking "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?"

I ask each of you to take a moment and look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, ‘WHAT IS MY PURPOSE?’ The answer lies in the pit of your soul, your deepest gut instinct, and it’s my belief if you pray you will receive an answer.

So I challenge you to begin today making the life you desire. Live the life you deserve. Appreciate the fact that you can even see the words on this page clearly. I know that I am God’s child and he has the ability to heal me. Yet, what I want more than anything is to travel the road God has called me to travel, no matter where it may lead me.

I pray you have the strength to continue on your journey as I do mine.

Boston Youth Summer 2013 Job Program, Deadline 12/7/12

BOSTON: Youth Enrichment Services (YES) is now accepting applications for our Career Exploration Program, a sought-after job readiness program that guarantees youth a summer 2013 job placement! 

 

The program runs from January 2013 through August 2013. Students over 14 years of age are eligible to apply and must commit to all three components:

12-Weeks of Job Readiness Workshops

Tuesdays from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. starting January 8th through March 26th

Workshop topics include: professionalism, resume writing, interviewing techniques, computer program applications, job search, and office tasks

 

Develop a professional portfolio upon completion of the workshops

 

Week-long Internship

An UNPAID internship the week of April 16-19 (spring recess) at the YES Office

Support YES Staff on administrative tasks practicing skills learned

 

Summer Job Placement

A PAID job (25 hours per week for 6 weeks between July - August)

Job placements consists of a variety of fields including healthcare facilities, schools, corporations, etc.
