The 2015 Guide to #VisionStatements and #GoalSetting
“Establishing your brand by identifying your passion”
Starts….with
a vision of your purpose and is accomplished by goal setting
www.businessdictionary.com
Brands
are built on what people are saying about you, not what you are saying about
yourself. CEO,
Guy Kawasaki
Your personal vision statement guides your life and provides the direction necessary to
chart the course of your days, choices you make, helps you achieve your goals,
guides you to apply what you’ve learned, and ultimately is the LEADERSHIP legacy
you leave behind.
Webster’s
dictionary defines vision as…..
1.
A
thought, concept, or object formed by the imagination
2.
A
manifestation to the senses of something immaterial
3.
To
act or power of imagination
What is your Vision?
We
have all thought about the things we’d like to accomplish in our lifetime.
However, most never write these thoughts down. A vision statement describes how
you see yourself in the future,
but speaking it and writing it in the present tense. Meaning you have not
accomplished these things yet, but you are making the statement as if you have.
For example, ‘I am a motivational
speaker.’ ‘I am a business owner.’ ‘I am a president of a company that
resells used sneakers and b-caps. ’I am
happy.’ ‘I am smart.’ ‘I am an Author of a Best Selling Novel.’
‘I am a straight A & B student
and have become a 1st generation college graduate.’ “I am Press Secretary for the United
States.’ ‘I am a reporter for the NBA.’
‘I have been accepted into the White
House Internship program.’ ‘I am a
medical student at Harvard.’ ‘I am
an inventor and have been working with MIT to bring my idea to market.’ “I am a home owner’. ~
Although you haven’t accomplished these things we are speaking them into
existence.

**
First
create this vision for you. Remember you being your statements with ‘I AM’, but
then ensure that the 5 people you spend the most time with have vision
statements for their lives as well.
** Take this a
step further, but ONLY after you have a written statement ~ create a Pinterest,
video, or vision board.
Let’s take a look at some abbreviated SAMPLES
I am Tameka Jackson. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in
engineering with honors from MIT and have overcome the abuse I experienced growing
up as a child. I have been accepted into a national fellowship program. Starting
this summer I will be working in Boston, MA for the FBI and I volunteer on
my weekends.
My name is Michael Lawson. I am a graduate of Jeremiah E.
Burke High School. I secured an internship with the New England Patriots. I
take 3 busses from Dorchester to Foxboro just to make this internship every
week. At night and on my weekends I deliver pizza to make extra money. I have
started my own sports agency and have interviewed other sport agents to learn
how they started their own businesses. I just received a job offer to work for
a national sports agency, and I’m excepting while I continue to work my
business plan.
My name is
Nichole Smith I am in the best shape of my life. I have not let the fact that I
became pregnant at a young age, or the fact that I was homeless in my youth,
stop me from becoming my greatest self. I have a cosmetology certificate and am
able to do the best make-up in Boston. I am also one year away from earning by Masters
in Communications degree. I have two best friends, have joined an awesome

while being only 35 years old. I have earned my Doctorate in Educational Leadership
and I’m known for my research expertise in Career Development. You can read my
story in Black Enterprise, Ebony & Essence Magazine under successful

TAKE ACTION
Write the vision, and make it
plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for
an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it will
tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. ~ Habakkuk

NOW TIME TO MEMORIZE AND POST UP IN YOUR HOUSE!
Next steps ….
Take your vision and turn it into action by setting
goals….
GOAL
Webster’s
dictionary defines a goal as…..
1.
The
result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end
Describe the goal you hope to reach. Try to keep it between 1-2 sentences.
For example, In order for you to have been accepted into graduate school you
needed to obtain letters of recommendations, write essays, and earned good
grades. In order to start your own business I tend to recommend that my clients
conduct an informational interview with three business owners to ask questions
on how they got started. In order for you to find a job or a board seat, you
should make a list of the places you want to apply, select an outfit, print
your resume/CV, apply and follow-up with a phone call.
Review your vision statement and determine what steps (micro-goals)
you need to accomplish in order to make this vision come true! I’d like to see
at least five goals, 3 that you will do each month in 2015. Remember
they need to be small steps.
Goal 1:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 2:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 3:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 4:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Goal 5:
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
Lastly, the final step is for you to determine what you
will need in order to accomplish these goals (personal, academic, professional,
entrepreneurial). No one does anything alone!

A
few of Tascha’s Lessons in #Entrepreneurship
Ø
There is value in internships, volunteer work and/or working for
someone else to gain experience that can be used in entrepreneurship.
Ø
There will be disappointments such as: not getting a contract,
client bounce checks, clients not paying you for months, so save and plan ahead
and find a person you can vent to.
Ø
Even if you work alone, you need many mentors. Find them by any
means necessary.
Ø
Musts: resume/CV, website, blog, LinkedIn, and business facebook
page.
Ø
Conduct informational interviews with anyone (no matter age,
gender or race) you admire for their leadership, education, the fact that they
own a business, know powerful people, etc.
